Is This Really a Thing?

Wow! Is this really an ad at a subway station, posted for all to see? Sex is in your face at every turn. Billboards, TV advertisements, magazines, etc. Why do we even question the high statistics of single moms, teen sex, and drug use at an early age? By allowing these ads, we are creating an environment for them to think this type of behavior is acceptable and appropriate. As a mother of a pre-teen aged daughter, I’m living this life right now! There is no way that I am able to keep her from seeing these advertisements , so I’m busy working overtime at home helping her understand the right path and how to process what she is seeing.

How can we lower our negative statistics in this country if we don’t stop feeding them the very information that we are complaining about? In regards to the ad listed above, let’s be clear about one thing – there is nothing wrong with being a virgin! I remember hearing stories from my grandparents that it was respectful and classy if you were still a virgin. Now, did this mean there still weren’t people out there who criticized them for still holding their V card, of course not! But I don’t think there were billboards out there with a phone number for people to call to lose their virginity. The times we live in have changed, yes! But why are we supporting an ad like this?

Alcohol as an Excuse?

Tell me what part of this ad is helping to decrease the negative body issues woman have against themselves? How does this lift someone up who has negative thoughts about their body or has been bullied because they aren’t a size 2? Adding alcohol in the mix like it’s an excuse to justify this is disgusting.

This woman is someone’s mother or daughter and I’m sure there won’t be one person who will allow this to be posted about their family member. Out of all the different ideas and slogans out there that could have been used for this ad, they went down a path of stereotyping this type of woman and attempted to make it a joke to bring profit.

How is this teaching our peers to treat everyone with love and respect no matter what they look like? Just because you have an idea in your mind of what a ‘real woman’ should look like doesn’t mean someone outside those lines are any less or unimportant.

Beach Body Ready?

Early Summer, we all see them, right? The advertisements for gym memberships, weight loss supplements and swim suit brands with sexy models in tiny bikinis.. all asking if you’re ‘beach body ready’. Ever notice what the similarities are from ad to ad? If you guessed the ads portrayed a range of different healthy body types, you would be wrong. These ads are SCREAMING body image at you! They are showing you what the stereotype of a ‘beach body ready’ females looks like. Let’s not get too far off, these woman and men are beautiful and as long as their image is what they feel comfortable looking like, then that it all that matters. Who’s to say what body type is appropriate for the beach?

You’re own body is what you want it to be. You have the choice to look how you want as long as in your mind you are comfortable. You don’t have to look like these advertisements in order to be happy with yourself. You’ll never be secure with yourself if you are constantly searching through advertisements for guidance on how to feel and look. These negative stereotypes of tiny woman in tiny bikinis are why other woman have self confidence issues and often lead to eating disorders and other severe issues. Now, with that being said, I am absolutely NOT ragging on these woman in the advertisements! More power to them that they are able to put the work in and get to the image they feel comfortable in, but when putting up the billboards of them and stating ‘Are you beach body ready?’, let’s be a bit more sensitive to the woman who don’t look like that are still beach body ready.

Boy’s Club

Looking for Engineers? This advertisement is looking for 150 extra employees in order to keep up wit their growing company. What this ad is leading you to think is that these 150 positions that are open are for men only. Notice there is not one woman in this advertisements. Even if I did hold a degree that would qualify me for this position, why would I want to work for a company that is publicly advertising themselves as a ‘boy’s only club’.
Did you know that in 2017 21.8% of undergraduate students in the engineering field were woman? When given a chance, woman have and are still continuing to prove themselves equal in the workforce.

Woman vs. Cleaning Ads

Has anyone figured out why it’s 2019, and the majority of the cleaning advertisements are still featuring women? It’s amazing to me with all the woman power we have in this day and age, company’s are still getting away with posting ads such as this one. I understand the stereotype that we’ve all come to know is that it’s the woman that stays home to cook and clean and raise the children, but with more woman taking higher stake positions in companies, we are seeing more and more men taking the role of the ‘homemaker’. What used to be the norm, has not changed to be the complete opposite. Men staying home is just as beneficial to the family as it used to be for woman. Woman are making more money and able to take the reigns in higher company’s and it only makes sense for the other parent to be the one to stay home and tend to the family’s needs. This doesn’t mean that one parent is superior over the other – it simple is how that family is working to make ends meet and to keep a good balance for home and work life.
